Nature... The Recycler!
How is the past affecting the future?
This week you will design a brochure or newsletter identifying the geography, issues, how residents/government are dealing with them for a watershed in another state. Location choices could include somewhere you want to visit (you should know the water quality before you drink it!), where your family originally came from, or where you would like to go to college!

Nature... The Recycler!
How is the past affecting the future?
This weeks focus is on how nutrients cycle through the Bio-Geo-Chemical spheres. Building off water, and then looking more closely at Nitrogen, Phosphorous, and Carbon, students will gain a good understanding how vital it is we look at the use of vital nutrients, and good stewardship of the environment.

H-2-the-Oh!
How can a force shape our environment?
We have been so busy since my return! Students concluded their Oceans unit, understanding the key process of the movement of water, and the sun's energy to tie into previous content of weather systems and water properties. Students now have a better understanding about where life is found in the oceans, and the planetary need for a healthy ocean ecosystem.
Grades are for Quarter 3 are posted Friday!

Pollution Research Paper
Research and Document a Specific Marine Pollutant
Science in the World Rubric
Your paper should be 7 paragraphs (introduction, paragraphs a, b, c, d, e and conclusion)
a) What is the pollutant or pollution?
Include the following terms in your definition and description:
· Which pollutant/pollution classification type is it under?
· Material make-up – its composition
· Spatial distribution – where is it found in or around the ocean?
· How much of this pollutant is getting in the ocean?
b) What are the harmful characteristics of the pollutant?
· List the primary negative effects it has on the environment and life
· List its general benefits and commercial value
· Note if the demand is increasing or decreasing
c) Describe how the pollutant originates, and then makes it way into the ocean
· Processes(s) by which the pollutant is initially generated
· Methods or processes by which the pollutant is transported to ocean
d) List and describe ALL the REAL or POTENTIAL NEGATIVE impacts on the environment or marine life by the pollutant
· Note any physical or biological effects by the direct contact of the pollutant.
· Note any indirect physical or biological effects of the pollutant on the environment or life forms.
· How serious is the problem with type of ocean pollution?
e) List and briefly describe the ways in which the pollutant could be reduced or eliminated
· Note at least one possible (realistic) suggestions.
· BE SURE to mention how this will make the ocean healthier.

H-2-the-Oh!
How can a force shape our environment?
Over the next two weeks, students will launch into their new unit on the Oceans of Earth. They will explore deep ocean currents, and waves, design a travel brochure for one of the many features formed by our ocean, understand the forces behind the tides, and conduct and write a research paper on pollution in the ocean.
I will be out for two weeks, so students will be supplied with the necessary materials to use the text and launch into this part of the unit successfully. I am still available for contact, and encourage email use for any questions or concerns. [email protected]

Blame it on the Sun
Why is energy important?
This week we are continuing our understanding of weather systems. Cold fronts, warm fronts, isobars, high and low pressure; all the concepts that help in iinterpreting weather maps.
We will also conduct an experiment trying to answer the question : Does soil and water heat evenly? and how does that effect weather systems?

Blame it on the Sun
Why is energy important?
Most of this week is dedicated to the completion of our Geopark cereal box covers.
Thursday, our new unit starts. We begin looking at the global distribution of the sun's heat energy by starting with the composition of our atmosphere! Followed by the transformation of that energy, with Conduction, Convection, and Radiation.
This unit promises to be a lab intensive one, as we analyze results of heat transfer in different materials in order to understand weather patterns and global warming.

How has technology and collaboration contributed to our understanding of the Universe?
This past week we focused on finishing our atomic models, and began an exploration of density; how it is defined, and how do we calculate it. The concept of density is important in understanding many of Earths processes, from weather patterns to earthquakes, density is a key explanation for these. We spent one day in the computer lab using an interactive tool, to better understand the relationship that exists between volume, mass, and density.
