"By doing an insect collection, you can, not only learn beneficial and harmful insects common to your area, but you will also learn structural modifications of various insects that have enabled them to survive & become such a successful and diverse group of animals.. You will also learn to use taxonomic keys to identify organisms. "
You may work in groups of up to 3, but this will be complete in outside classroom time, so choose partners you can work with outside school!

The Six Kingdoms of Life
Present a Phyla...
You and your group will put together a prezi presentation to teach your peers about your assigned phyla.
Your group will need to identify how your phyla is categorized. For example, Chorates are defined as being deuterostome animals
possessing a notochord, pharangeal slit, an endostyle, and a post-anal tail for at least some period of their life cycles.
You will also need to identify how the organisms in this phyla accomplish the necessities of life including:
Energy
Body Temperature
Movement
Waste Removal
Body Plan
ect....
Your presentation should be about 15 minutes long, can include media, and other interesting pieces that will engage your students! Be sure to share the prezi with me, so I can monitor your progress, and provide ease during presentation. Presentations will be done Thursday and Friday of this week.
The following rubric will be used.

Well, we are finally back in full swing! We have been studying the seed plants, and exemplar species of non-vascular and vascular non-see plants. This week is focused on looking at structures in the form of dissections. We dissected flowers, and seeds to view key structures up close. The root and shoot systems will later be compared to animal systems of survival.

Progress Reports - February 26, 2013 ..............................................................................
Letter to my students and their parents.
I appreciate everyone's patience while I recover. Student work is coming in at a steady rate, and I will begin grading assignments as they do. My recovery is going slow, but I am determined to get back to the classroom as soon as I am able. My expected return is Monday March 4, 2013.
In order to be fair on progress reports, (I) Incompletes were entered into the gradebook indicating that either you (your child) have not completed an assignment in the quarter, or I have not completed grading your submitted assignments. Any (I) that remains by parent-teacher conferences next week will need to be addressed.
Thank-you again for your patience. After a short visit today, I am very excited for my return to the classroom and engage in our exploration of life on this planet.

This week we have been working on finishing up our quick survey for Kingdoms Archea, Bacteria, Protista, and Fungi. Students are currently working on a project that is an integrated project that looks at the interconnectedness of science, art, and society. Students have been assigned to create an originally art piece centered on microbiology, and will write a one-page paper that references this article by John Holland, pioneer in the intersection of the two content areas.
His article Art and Science is found at naturescience.org.
Art work is due Monday February 11, 2013.
The paper is to be emailed to [email protected] for me to grade by Friday, February 15, 2013.

How does knowledge of natural processes benefit us?
Well, we have finished our first unit on cell biology, and introduced the new one with an amazing Socratic Seminar on the issues of genetic engineering. Students have considered the ethics involved in genetic engineering including: fairness of access due to money, the potential of unfair advantages for athletes that break rules, the need for limiting human disease and the potential risks of gene technologies, the rights of offspring to occur "naturally" vs. parental rights.... and so much more. Students really embraced this topic!
Our next topic is more specific. We will look at a social issue of world hunger. Our question is: Are GMOs the answer to world hunger? I am excited to see how this very controversial topic will rest with the group!
This week we begin to understand more fully the progression of thought that has lead to genetic engineering. This unit is an introduction to Mendelian Genetics, Meiosis, Patterns of heredity and Human Genetics, DNA structure, sequence, and protein synthesis, and DNA mutations.

How have technological advances increased our understanding of life?
Organelles...
This week was dedicated to the exploration of cells. Examined our cells, took a video tour inside the cell, and compared cells to a known location in the world. Noted comparisons included a Walmart, complete with lysosomes compared to the restroom, the US borders compared to cell walls, and the library security gate compared to membranes. A quiz was given on Friday as a formative assessment, to gauge where students are at in their learning.
Feedback for students to prepare for their summative includes:
As a whole students did well on identifying microscope parts and use. Students are struggling still in identifying cell parts and functions. Suggestions follow:
• Review notebooks nightly.
There are a lot of parts and functions to remember. We will be making flashcards to study from.
• Supplemental Videos
My first YouTube playlist for Midvale Biology! Check out some animations, songs, and lectures about cells.
• Supplemental Sites
Graphic Organizer of functions and parts
More in-depth explanation of parts and functions
Homework due Friday Sept. 14, 2012
Biology: The Dynamics of Life read pp. 179 - 187. Answer questions 1 - 6 pg. 187.

Week of September 4, 2012 ...............................................................................................
I Spy with My Assisted Eye...
How have technological advances increased our understanding of life?
Cells, Cells, Cells...
This week will be focused on microscope use, and identifying cells and cell structures. Students will look at onion cells, some creek water, and cheek cells to look for life under the microscope. Objective include looking to identify the type of cell, and making good observations of life under the microscope.
Students can prepare for lab with the following sites:
Microscope Use
Onion Lab
Virtual Cheek Cell Lab
Water Lab
Homework Due Friday Sept. 7, 2012
Cell comparison drawings and key.

Week of August 28, 2012 ...................................................................................................
This week we have begun our MYP unit:
I Spy with My Assisted Eye...
How have technological advances increased our understanding of life?
Microscopes...
Homework this week has included defining life, creating a timeline of the technological advances of microscopes and how that affected the development of cell theory, and comparative drawings of bacteria, plant, and animal cells (due Friday September 7, 2012). While students may find images to utilize anywhere, the following are suggested sources for the drawings:
Bacteria
Animal
Plant
Gone Thursday??? Here are the notes comparing prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells.
